I began making face jugs around 2018 as an effort to continue the Southern African American ceramic tradition as well as to reference the Ife terracotta heads of Nigeria. However since then, I’ve become aware of so many different face-vessel traditions and now see it as an almost universal concept. The carved lines on the face reference tribal markings or facial scarification which carried meaning related to identity and status.
