This sculptural bowl was made with wild clay from Sarasota, FL that I collected and processed myself. This piece was coil built slowly by hand rather than on the potter’s wheel. Its form is inspired by Nupe pottery from Nigeria.
After building it and firing the pot in an electric kiln, it was blackened with smoke by firing it a second time in a saggar with Spanish moss and sawdust. The variegated markings on the piece remind me of batik dyed cloth. The surface has been sealed with beeswax.
This piece is fragile and is not to be used as dishware. Dimensions: 12”x12”x6”
